Captain Elizabeth Nelson
Projects Officer
Command Headquarters
Dhaka Bangladesh
Elizabeth oversees the work of: 13 primary schools serving over 2,000 children; a residential school for orphaned girls and visually impaired boys; two special education centres for hearing impaired children; nine clinics; two nutrition and rehabilitation units; several community development and income generating projects; and an integrated AIDS management project with two centres for counselling and rehabilitating commercial sex workers. All the projects have also taken on the issue of trafficked women and children. Helping to educate people about the potential of their children and of the women being trafficked will hopefully help prevent this from happening.
The ministry involves supporting and developing staff, being a liaison between the donors and the projects, finding new donors as funding is needed, facilitating and evaluating the effectiveness of the projects to reach their capacity to fulfill the mission of The Salvation Army.
Funds received through the Partners in Mission Appeal have allowed for adult literacy courses, expanded the library at the training college, purchased motorcycles so staff and officers can get to the various communities to be more involved in ministry, helped set up income generating activities to help run corps activities, purchased Sunday school materials and build corps halls and officers’ quarters.
“God is doing amazing things through the project staff. Lives are changed and helped by giving them opportunities to learn and development themselves. Women are able to leave the brothels and live productive lives. Children are receiving extra help to go as far through the school system as they are able. The exciting thing for me has been watching the project managers get excited about their faith and want to grow more in the word. We started quarterly training on Christian leadership for the managers and this has resulted in a deepening of their faith and application of these principles to their lives and work.”
Prayer requests:
* For officers, cadets and soldiers to be people of holiness, integrity and compassion;
* For God’s direction as we go deeper into dealing with the issue of trafficking;
* For God’s provision as we seek to find funding for our schools;
* For our youth, who have a strong passion for God and sharing Christ with others.
