Stewardship of the Environment

May 9th, 2005 · No Comments

Verse:
And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. God made the wild
animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” — Genesis 1:24-26

Thought:
There’s no doubt the world is becoming more crowded everyday. These increases in population bring increased pressure on the environment. Developing nations are industrializing at a tremendous speed and with this development comes a desire to emulate the consumerism of the West. And more pressure is placed on environmental resources.

What responsibility do Christians have in this issue? The creation story tells us that we were created to “rule” over all the earth, over all that was created and this has been used as justification for pillaging the earth’s resources with impunity. We need to be stewards of all that God has given; given for our use, but not abuse. I believe that, as a Christian, I have a deeper responsibility than a nonbeliever, because of my personal relationship with the Creator.
