Mission Mexico - Day 1

March 21st, 2007 · No Comments

We left Edmonton bleary-eyed and half asleep at 6:55 this morning. We took advantage of the flight to Phoenix to catch up on our sleep.

During the one-hour stop over in Phoenix we grabbed a bite to eat then boarded the plane for the next leg of the journey. As we settled into our seats, we realized two of our group were missing. The flight staff paged Hall and Hicks to return to the plane, but with no success. Just as we thought we might have to leave them behind, they boarded the plane to the applause of all the passengers.

We arrived safely in Mexico, and equally important, all our luggage arrived with us. Passing through customs, Jen Fenton asked if it was hot outside. To which the customs’ officer replied, “It is hot for you, but not hot for me!” The temperature on the first day of spring is always relative to your location.

We loaded our gear on the transport and drove to the children’s home for lunch. We were  stopped by the police once, but it was just a check. While at the home, we had a surprise visit from Al and Janet´s former neighbours in Sherwood Park. They support the home and know the children well.

Lunch was followed by a shopping trip. The ladies took the Major shopping and spent some time discussing the important question: chicken thighs or chicken breasts? The men bought the tents in which the team will be sleeping.

After shopping, it was back to the home for devotions and to get the tents set up.

We capped the day with tacos for supper. Doug Fenton ate a jalapeƱo! It was green, a vegetable and spicy. We’ll let you know how he survives the night.
